Standard UpdateApril 2026

ISO 14001 — Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) Published

The Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) for ISO 14001 has been released, marking the last development step before formal publication. The revised standard is expected to be published in April 2026, replacing ISO 14001. The International Accreditation Forum (IAF) has proposed a three-year transition period, meaning all existing ISO 14001 certificates must be transitioned to the 2026 edition by May 2029.

Key changes include: alignment with the latest Harmonized Structure (HS), explicit consideration of climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem health (Clauses 4.1 & 4.2), a new Clause 6.3 for structured change management, expanded top management accountability, lifecycle perspective reinforcement, replacement of "outsourced processes" with "externally provided processes," and a requirement for defined objective(s) for each internal audit.

ISO 14001 — Guidance for New & Existing Certified Organisations

For organisations already certified to ISO 14001:

  • 1. Obtain a copy of the ISO/FDIS 14001:2026 (or the published standard once available) and review all changes against your current EMS.
  • 2. Conduct a gap analysis between the 2026 requirements and your existing environmental management system — identify where your current policies, procedures and documented information already comply and where gaps exist.
  • 3. Implement changes to close identified gaps — update documentation, introduce new operational controls (e.g. Clause 6.3 change management), and ensure climate change and lifecycle considerations are explicitly addressed.
  • 4. Ensure all relevant personnel are trained and aware of the revised requirements, especially top management on their expanded accountability and support roles.
  • 5. Conduct a full internal audit of your EMS against the 2026 requirements and hold a formal management review covering the audit findings and transition plan.
  • 6. Contact RBA Registrars to schedule your transition audit — this can be combined with your next surveillance or recertification audit to minimise disruption and cost.

For organisations seeking certification for the first time:

  • 1. Implement your EMS directly against ISO 14001 — there is no benefit in implementing the 2015 edition as all new certifications will be issued to the 2026 standard.
  • 2. Ensure your system addresses the new and clarified requirements from the outset, including climate change considerations, lifecycle perspective, change management (Clause 6.3) and defined internal audit objectives.
  • 3. Conduct a thorough gap analysis, complete your internal audit and hold a management review before applying for certification.
  • 4. Contact RBA Registrars to discuss your scope, receive a quotation and begin the Stage 1 and Stage 2 certification audit process.
